Art Residency

Four to eight weeks on the parcel, for people whose work gets better with quiet and worse with a schedule.

Who it is for

Makers, writers, builders, and growers. We have hosted a chairmaker, a documentary photographer, and someone writing about soil microbiology. The common thread is not medium. It is that the resident has a question the parcel can help answer, and enough independence to work without being entertained.

Applicants do not need a portfolio of land work. They need a project that will be different at the end of six weeks than it was at the beginning.

What you get

A furnished room in the residency cabin, shared kitchen and bath, and a workbench in the shop. Access to the parcel, the library, and the tools. A stipend toward materials. The expectation of one open studio or reading at the end of the stay, and one thing left behind that the land can use.

What we ask

Some participation in the working life of the place — a few hours a week, not a job. Residents who are here during hay or kidding or the burn get pulled in, and that is usually the part they remember. We also ask for a short written note at the end about what the time produced, which goes into the record.

How to apply

Send a short letter describing the project you would work on, the length of stay you want, and what you would need from us. Include images or writing if it helps, but do not send a formal portfolio. Decisions are made by the three of us, twice a year, for spring and autumn terms.
