The question

Quantum biology studies whether effects usually confined to the very small — coherence, tunnelling, entanglement — play a functional role in living systems. The strongest evidence is in photosynthesis, where energy appears to find its way to the reaction centre more efficiently than a random walk would allow, and in bird migration, where the compass in a robin's eye seems to depend on a quantum-entangled pair of electrons.

This is a young field and a contested one. Some of the early claims about long-lived coherence in warm, wet biological systems have not held up. The interesting part is not the certainty; it is that the questions are now askable.

Why it is on this site

Because the land is a reminder that we do not fully understand the systems we are managing. A soil is not a machine with inputs and outputs; it is a set of processes we can measure poorly and interfere with easily. Quantum biology is the edge of that humility.

We are not conducting research here. We are reading, arguing, and occasionally hosting someone who knows more than we do. If you are working on this and want a quiet week in the county, the residency is open to you.
